Airlines put crackers on their naughty list for the holiday season

It is almost holiday time and many people will be travelling to enjoy some valuable time with friends and family. But, new research from airport parking operator and retailer, Airport Parking & Hotels (APH), has found passengers need to be extra careful with what they are carrying.

The company has looked into airline policies into the carriage of crackers (the festive table decorations rather than the dry biscuits), uncovering there are no set rules and entitlements differ significantly between carriers and destination. Its findings show that over two thirds of the most popular airlines actually have a strict no-cracker rule onboard.

For a start, travellers heading to the US should note that crackers are banned on all airlines flying to the country whether in hand or checked luggage. Elsewhere, the rules fifer by carrier although all that permit their carriage require them to be sealed in original packaging and stored in checked luggage.

The research highlights that South African Airways and Virgin Atlantic permit travellers to carry a single box of crackers, while British Airways, easyJet, Qantas Airways, Qatar Airways and TUI are among those that have a two box entitlement.

Aer Lingus, Air France, Air India, Air New Zealand, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways, Flybe, Icelandair, Jet2.com, KLM, Norwegian Air, Ryanair, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, WestJet, are among the airlines that do not accept crackers onboard, according to the research

APH also highlights that passengers travelling to any destination with luxury crackers should also be wary when returning home as some cracker surprises, such as scissors, would need to be packed in checked luggage.

But, it is not just crackers that are on the air travel naughty list. Other holiday essentials including snow globes, champagne, brandy butter and cheese boards are restricted onboard and should be packed in hold luggage. Also, flyers are advised to not travel with already wrapped gifts as they may need to be unwrapped by airport security staff.
