American Airlines may 'eventually' establish routes to India, Africa

4 March, 2019

American Airlines VP of network and schedule planning Vasu Raja noted the airline's order for additional Boeing 787 aircraft may potentially lead the airline to "eventually" establish routes to India and Africa, "markets which are very different from the ones that we have been in historically, but ones we believe will be very profitable" (Skift, 28-Feb-2019). According to the CAPA Fleet Database, American Airlines has 22 787-8 aircraft on order and 25 787-9 aircraft on order. Mr Raja noted the airline's previous Chicago O'Hare-New Delhi service was unprofitable due to a lack of product competition, poor scheduling and operating more capacity than required. He said there is "definitely something" for US carrier growth to India, adding American Airlines "just need to figure out how we can make something like that work".
