Asia Pacific airlines shine in OAG’s “Punctuality League”

Asia Pacific airlines fared extremely well in OAG's annual "Punctuality League" report for 2017, making up seven of the top 20 airlines. This impressive number was the highest of any region globally. Of the Asia Pacific airlines on the list, Hong Kong Airlines led the charge coming in at second place, while Qantas, Japan Airlines, Jetstar Asia and Skymark Airlines all featured in the top 10.

Isolating Asia Pacific itself, Hong Kong Airlines takes the top spot as the most punctual airline with a result of 88.83%. Qantas, last year's winner, is in second place consistently making the top 10 in this category with high OTP of 86.18%. Japanese airlines continue to perform well with three carriers in this category and India's largest carrier, IndiGo, returns to the Top 10 Asia Pacific airlines with an OTP of 81.22%.

Special mention must go to Latvian carrier, airBaltic, the only carrier in the world to crack the 90% mark with an impressive 90.01%.

OAG created several new categories for the 2017 report, including mega airlines, which comprise the top 20 carriers measured by scheduled flights. IndiGo, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways all feature on this list. In fact, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways features in the top two positions respectively. Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines round out the top five.

Mega Airports were also measured for the first time, which included airports with 30 million or more departing seats per annum. The top 20 airports in the mega airports category on average ensured that 76.6% of arriving and departing flights operated under 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival and departure times in 2017. Tokyo Haneda ranks in first place having headed up the previous category of airports (over 20m) for the past two years. Asia Pacific has six airports on the list, trailing just behind North America with seven and equaling Europe with six. Seoul Incheon joined the Punctuality League this year as it takes 20th place in this category.
