ASPAC appointment highlights of the month – August 2019

The travel, tourism and aviation industries in the Asia Pacific region witness policy and upper level changes on a daily basis. Here are the key executive changes for August 2019:

  • Thai Smile appointed Charita Leelayudth as CEO;
  • Philippines AirAsia confirmed the appointment of Ricky Isla as CEO, replacing Dexter Comendador;
  • Qantas appointed Stephanie Tully as chief customer officer, effective 07-Aug-2019;
  • Cathay Pacific confirmed the following board changes:
    • Rupert Hogg resigned as an executive director and CEO;
    • Augustus Tang appointed as an executive director and CEO;
    • Paul Loo resigned as an executive director and chief customer and commercial director;
    • Ronald Lam appointed as an executive director and chief customer and commercial director.
  • AirAsia Group announced the following leadership reorganisation on 16-Aug-2019:
    • AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes appointed as CEO of airasia.com, the company's travel and lifestyle e-commerce platform. The carrier plans to appoint a new group CEO in due course, who will report to Mr Fernandes;
    • AirAsia Group deputy CEO (airlines) Bo Lingam will continue to lead the airline business as AirAsia Group president (airlines) and also head up AirAsia's shared services company AirAsia SEA;
    • AirAsia Group deputy CEO (technology and digital) Aireen Omar appointed as AirAsia Group president (RedBeat Ventures).
  • Cathay Pacific Group appointed Mandy Ng as the new CEO of HK Express on 19-Aug-2019;
  • China Express Airlines announced the following appointments of executives for a three year term, effective 20-Aug-2019:
    • Chairman: Xiaojun Hu;
    • CEO: Longjiang Wu;
    • President: Zhiliang Li;
    • Co-president: Sansheng li;
    • VP and secretary of the board: Jie Feng;
    • VP: Xinyu Cui;
    • Financial director: Jingbo Zhang.
  • Air New Zealand appointed Jeff McDowall as acting CEO, effective 26-Sep-2019, and Dame Therese Walsh as board chairman, effective 25-Sep-2019;
  • Malindo Air plans to appoint Mushafiz Mustafa Bakri as CEO, effective 23-Sep-2019;
  • Virgin Australia appointed a new executive leadership team on 28-Aug-2019, including:
    • Keith Neate - Chief financial officer;
    • Stuart Aggs - Chief operations officer, from current role as acting chief operations officer;
    • John MacLeod - Chief commercial officer;
    • Danielle Keighery - CEO, from current role as group executive, brand, marketing and public affairs;
    • Dayna Field - Chief legal and risk officer (current chief legal and risk officer);
    • Lucinda Gemmell - Chief people and culture officer (current group executive, people);
    • Karl Schuster - CEO of Velocity Frequent Flyer (current CEO of Velocity Frequent Flyer), and;
    • Sharyn Page - Company secretary (current company secretary).
  • Virgin Australia stated Merren McArthur has "agreed to continue to lead Tigerair as it transitions to the new group structure in the coming months", as well as continue to act in the CCO role of Virgin Australia until John MacLeod joins the group;
  • IndiGo announced CFO Rohit Philip resigned his position, effective 15-Sep-2019;
  • Philippines AirAsia appointed Joseph Omar Castillo as chairman of the board, effective 01-Sep-2019;
  • AirAsia X appointed Rebecca Kong Say Tsui as joint secretary, effective 01-Sep-2019. Ms Tsui will replace Lau Yen Hoon who has resigned;
  • AirAsia X reported the resignation of Wong Mee Yen as CFO;
  • Cathay Pacific announced the appointment of Patrick Healy as new chairman, succeeding John Slosar, who will retire at the conclusion of the next board meeting on 06-Nov-2019.
