Cathay Pacific responded to claims the carrier plans to launch Canberra services, stating: "We constantly monitor market demand in all regions and explore opportunities for route expansion. However, we currently have no plans in place to operate flights to Canberra" (Canberra Times, 10-Jan-2017). According to data from Australia's Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics, Cathay Pacific is the seventh largest passenger carrier and fourth largest freight carrier operating in the country.
