This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA – Centre for Aviation members, we deliver a data snapshot on Brazil, where there appears to be strong sentiment for a travel recovery despite the country continuing to be hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a recent report entitled: ‘Covid 19: Brazil remains a paradox during the pandemic‘, aviation and travel industry market intelligence specialist CAPA – Centre for Aviation has stated that even as Brazil remains in the throes of the Covid-19 pandemic, a survey suggests that a sizeable proportion of the country’s population seems interested in travelling before the end of 2020.
This is based upon research from travel agency and metasearch engine KAYAK who conducted a poll in the country which indicated 47% of respondents would be ready to travel in the 2H2020. The majority of respondents, 59%, aimed to take a family trip, and 51% were interested in travelling by air. Those are encouraging signs, but as CAPA highlights, the key outcome will be “that the desire to travel materialises into actual bookings”.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) in its latest Air Passenger Analysis for May-2020 highlighted that Brazil was the only major global domestic market where the annual fall in capacity (-91.1%) broadly matched the contraction in demand (-93.1%). Its load factor was therefore the highest amongst the key domestic markets (71.2%) and also fell less dramatically than in the other main domestic markets (down 11pp).
The country’s Covid-19 case numbers have exploded, but two of the country’s largest airlines posted solid month-on-month traffic results for Jun-2020, and plan to keep adding back service through Aug-2020.
