DATA SPOTLIGHT: Ethiopia

10 March, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot, we look at Ethiopia, one of Africa's primary air markets that is championing enhanced connectivity to, from, and importantly within the Continent.

It used to all be about South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Egypt - historically the four key regional markets across Africa - but the landscape has changed and Ethiopia has now emerged as one of the continent's strongest nations, especially when it comes to the aviation sector. Its national carrier Ethiopian Airlines is proving that sustainable profitability can be achieved and is increasingly spreading its expertise across the Continent to support other nations' own ambitions.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts the air transport market in Ethiopia to grow by 226% in the next 20 years, under a scenario based on current trends. This would result in an additional 16.3 million passenger journeys by 2037. If met, this increased demand would support approximately USD13.5 billion in GDP and almost two million jobs.

From the platform of 7.2 million passengers, USD4.2 billion in GDP and 1.1 million jobs in 2017 sees even a downside scenario will grow to 20.1 million passengers, USD11.6 billion in GDP and 1.7 million jobs. An 'upside' scenario could even grow Ethiopia's aviation industry to 25.9 million passengers, USD14.9 billion in GDP and 2.2 million jobs.
