DATA SPOTLIGHT: Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

27 August, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members, we deliver a data snapshot on Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which is seeking permission to ease the current limit it has on domestic air movements.

The airport is reportedly reaching its existing limit of 50 domestic departure and 50 domestic arrivals per day which was set by Maharashtra in mid Jun-2020. Nationalist Congress Party leader Praful Patel has now applied to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray with a request to further increase the limit for domestic frequencies. According to local Indian reports it reportedly hopes to be permitted to handle up to 100 domestic departures and 100 domestic arrivals per day.

Mumbai is also gradually seeing a rise in international connectivity as the Indian government agrees new trade corridors with key foreign markets. This comes despite the country sustaining one of the worst Covid-19 outbreaks globally, which is heavily influencing air service recovery.

The airport though has discovered some positive findings from a recent restart feedback survey - 99.6% found air travel to be the most reliable mode of transport amidst the coronavirus pandemic and 98.4% of respondents found the airport to be safer than bus or train stations.
