DATA SPOTLIGHT: Peru

28 July, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members, we deliver a data snapshot on Peru, where despite the rising Covid-19 case counts, LCCs seem somewhat optimistic about the restart of operations.

The country's domestic market has changed during the last year as a couple of larger airlines have ceased operations, leaving the market leader LATAM Airlines Peru and two larger LCCs, Viva Air Peru and SKY Peru.

In addition, JetSMART has expressed interest in Peru's domestic market and recently confirmed it has commenced the certification process (AOC) to establish a carrier in the country, with plans to operate domestic and international services to South America and the Caribbean, initially starting domestic operations in 1Q2021.

Peru's airlines restarted domestic flights on 15-Jul-2020 after the country's aviation system had been shut down for nearly four months. The optimism from its aviation industry occurs as Peru continues to battle rising cases of Covid-19. Even though Peru was one of the first countries in Latin America to institute a lockdown, it is struggling to contain the virus. It has the second largest case count in South America behind Brazil.
