DATA SPOTLIGHT: Rome Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport

18 March, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members, we deliver a data snapshot on Rome Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, the largest air gateway in Italy, the country that has been at the centre of the COVID-19 outbreak that is now spreading across Europe.

Italy is currently on lockdown under a national quarantine as it tries to reduce the speed that COVID-19 is spreading through the country. Outside of the China, the origin of the outbreak, Italy has the most current cases at over 30,000, leaving over 2,500 dead.

Italian authorities say it could take a couple more weeks for the impact of the restrictions to be seen on the coronavirus outbreak nationwide, which is still surging in towns and cities outside the initial red zone in the north of the country.

Aeroporti di Roma has this week temporarily scaled down operations at Rome's airports with terminal T1 closing at Fiumicino and all check in operations, security checks and baggage reclaim being carried out in terminal T3. The airport is one of 17 that regulator ENAC will keep open in its "minimum airport infrastructure scenario" it has proposed to the Ministry of Transport due to the emergency situation.

ABOUT
Operated by Aeroporti di Roma, Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport is the main international gateway to Rome and the busiest airport in Italy. Hosting domestic, regional and international passenger and cargo services for over 45 airlines, the airport is a major hub for national carrier, Alitalia.
