DATA SPOTLIGHT: Tokyo Haneda Airport

29 April, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members, we deliver a data snapshot on Tokyo Haneda Airport, which has just become the world's largest airport by seat capacity.

This year was always going to be a milestone one for Tokyo's downtown airport after Japanese regulators allocated new slots to permit certain international routes. The latest tranche of international slot allocations were set to open up a whole new range of services from Japan's two major carriers and foreign airlines as part of a further shift of international service from Tokyo Narita Airport.

But, it is its longstanding domestic activity that has proven the instrument to its rise to the top of the airport capacity rankings from this week. At the start of the year it was down in fourth position behind Beijing Capital International, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International and Dubai International. Most recently it has been sat behind Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International, but new travel restrictions in Indonesia has seen it hit these new heights.

ABOUT
Tokyo International Airport, commonly known as Haneda Airport, is the busier of the two major airports serving Tokyo, and one of the busiest airports in the world. The airport has long been restricted to domestic and regional (intra-Asia) traffic, and it is a hub for airlines including Air Do, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Skymark Airlines and Solaseed Air. It underwent an expansion in 2010 with a new fourth runway. This provided a massive increase in slots, allowing the airport - with encouragement from the government administration - to expand into supporting international long-haul services.
