DATA SPOTLIGHT: Vietnam

5 May, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot, we look at Vietnam, which is continuing to see a return in domestic air travel, but is looking to the international market - and in particular China - in the longer term to develop trade and boost the local economy.

China is Vietnam's largest inbound market and its significance grew considerably during the second half of the last decade. From accounting for just under a quarter of all visitor arrivals in 2015, China was home to almost one in three arrivals by the end of the decade, supported by increased air connectivity between the two countries. During that period annual Chinese arrivals into Vietnam more than tripled to over 5.8 million visitors.

In fact, as the country starts to ease travel restrictions Vietnam Airlines has confirmed plans to add another Chinese route to its network with the debut of flights linking Ho Chi Minh City and Hangzhou, a city it has previously served from Da Nang. The airline plans to offer a four times weekly service flown by Airbus A321 equipment from 02-Jul-2020, according to Routes' Airline Route platform.

A new study has also highlighted that Vietnam's global tourism ambition needs to focus on China and short-haul travel. The survey of qualified travellers from first tier cities in China by hospitality consulting group C9 Hotelworks and Delivering Asia Communications, highlighted that nearly half of the respondents want to travel abroad this year, with 45% interested in travelling specifically to Vietnam.

Moreover, post Covid-19 Chinese travellers are looking at more mainstream, well-known destinations with top Vietnam picks being Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Nha Trang/Cam Ranh Bay and Halong Bay. Interestingly, around half (49%) said they would like to stay in 5-Star (25%) or 4-Star (24%) hotels, although the highest individual category was at the other end of the scale with budget/economy accommodation holding a 39% share.
