European Competition Commissioner sees 'workable solution' to new Italian national carrier

4 May, 2021

EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said she believes a "workable solution" can be found for Italy's plan to establish a new holding company, ITA, to replace Alitalia (Reuters, 02-May-2021). Ms Vestager added that ITA "has to be a real company" and there "has to be discontinuity otherwise ITA would be liable for Alitalia" and investment in the company must meet European market regulations. Investments by the Italian Government would need to "give a return that would satisfy private investors," she said.
