Expedia: Search trends indicate traveller confidence is rising

Expedia Group Media Solutions reported (10-Aug-2021) half of global travel searches in 2Q2021 were within zero and 21 days of travel. The company stated the global search window is lengthening, "indicating that traveller confidence is rising, and they are taking advantage of summer travel and starting to plan trips further out". Global searches for travel 22 to 90 days out accounted for more than 35% of searches in 2Q2021, up nearly 25% quarter-over-quarter.

  • Domestic travel: 55% of global domestic travel searches fell within the zero to 21 days search window, while searches 22 to 90 days out increased by nearly 20% quarter-over-quarter;
  • International travel. Travel within the 31 to 90 days out search window increased 30% from 1Q2021. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), searches 22 to 90 days out represented more than 40% of international searches in Q2, up from 15% in 1Q2021. During multiple weeks in 2Q2021, global international search growth outpaced domestic growth.
