Build your own airport. Is this the greatest job in aviation EVER?

26 May, 2017

No environmental impact studies needed, no engineering contracts to let, no pesky banks to borrow from, no landfill, no airline complaints about footing the bill. You can just go ahead and build your own airport if you want, on Brisbane Airport land. What's more you'll be paid for it.

But this one will be a bit different. Brisbane Airport has just announced it is on the hunt to find the perfect candidate to fulfil the position of 'LEGO®ist-in-Residence'.

There's no age limit specified, but your 10 year old son (or daughter) will probably be ineligible because they have laws in Queensland about child labour - even if he or she would be the best equipped to do the job.

Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO and MD Julieanne Alroe said the exacting position was being offered as part of Brisbane Airport's hugely successful 'Artist-in-Residence' programme.

The programme has included a variety of incredible artists since its launch in 2015, including: renowned realist painter Robert Brownhall who created a series of works featuring passengers, aircraft and incredible landscape views; and The Queensland Symphony Orchestra, who treated passengers and visitors to six 'pop-up' performances at the International and Domestic Terminals.

This time Brisbane Airport is looking for a genuine LEGO®ist who can create life sized installations and lead interactive workshops. It almost seems too good to be true…in fact it almost seems made up.

The Blue Swan did a little research and it turns out, this is actually a thing. LEGO® Certified Professionals exist, and have successful careers at that.

LEGO® Certified Professionals is a community-based programme made up of adult LEGO® hobbyists who have turned their passion for building and creating with LEGO® bricks into a full-time or part-time profession.

LEGO® Certified Professionals are not LEGO® employees, but they are officially recognised by the LEGO® Group as trusted business partners.

Each LEGO® Certified Professional is selected for the programme based on his or her:

  • Building proficiency
  • Enthusiasm for the LEGO® brick and building system
  • Professional approach towards other LEGO® fans and the broader public

We aren't sure if Brisbane Airport is looking for someone who needs to be certified however we are sure it wouldn't hurt.

The Opportunity:

  • The Artist-in-Residence will be contracted to BAC for a 12 month period (June 2017 to June 2018).
  • This is not a full-time position but rather an opportunity to receive a payment for something you love to do. Hours required at the airport will be flexible.
  • The LEGO®ist-in-Residence will need to be available for random LEGO® chats, planning sessions and corporate appearances. Brisbane or Queensland based is preferred.
  • Interested applicants can visit http://www.bne.com.au/artist-residence
  • Expressions of interest close 15 June 2017.

Are you up for the challenge? Ready to give away the day job and spend your time building LEGO® masterpieces? There's a good chance you won't even have to buy the LEGO® pieces. That'll already save you a few thousand dollars a year if you have under-10s.

Tell you what Julieanne, we'll offer a $500 prize + $500 for your favourite charity for the biggest LEGO® Blue Swan your new Artist can design!
