Google reports spiking summer travel searches, but consumers looking for alternatives to air travel

Google reported (06-Jun-2021) US travel searches for "summer vacation" and "sunscreen" are "seeing a major spike". According to the company, many people are still reluctant to travel by air and are looking into alternative transportation options or even local options, including:

  • Ground travel: In the US, there were over 60% more recreational vehicle related searches on Google Maps than there were a year ago. The metro areas most interested were Los Angeles, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas and Denver;
  • Beach and park locations: As the weather heats up, US Maps searches for "beaches" are up over 40% compared to May-2020, and searches for "parks" are up over 50%;
  • Camper stays: Camping related searches on Google Maps are trending up nearly 90% compared to the start of summer 2020. The top five areas interested in camping are Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Denver and Seattle;
  • Cycling tours: People are using Google Maps for cycling directions 44% more than they were in 2020. According to Google's cycling direction data, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington DC are the cities with the most cyclists. [more - original PR]
