Lufthansa Group CEO: ‘We are currently seeing the final phase before strong consolidation’ and is ‘significantly better placed’ due to Eurowings

Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr commented on plans for acquisition of Condor Flugdienst, arguing Condor could be advantageous for the group structure (Routes Online, 30-May-2019). “We want and will expand with Eurowings in the tourist segment. If and how Condor would support us, we will see”, Mr Spohr said, noting the group is “significantly better placed in the European consolidation process thanks to Eurowings”. On market conditions in Europe, he argued “we are currently seeing the final phase before strong consolidation”. “Everybody is trying to secure market shares and slots, everybody is concerned about losing market shares”, Mr Spohr continued, adding media enthusiasm for consolidation is “definitely higher than at the airlines themselves”.
