Austrian Airlines CEO: Domestic Austrian routes at risk in the coming years due to rail competition

9 August, 2019

Austrian Airlines CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech reported the carrier is considering suspending domestic Austrian routes in the future due to lack of profitability and competition with rail (ZIB2, 07-Aug-2019). He said Vienna-Salzburg, Vienna-Graz and Vienna-Klagenfurt routes are all at risk in the coming years due to high speed rail between the cities. According to OAG, Austrian Airlines is expected to handle 848,457 domestic seats in 2019, a decrease of 7.5% year-on-year.
