DAT CEO: EU flight compensation regulations pose threat to passenger safety

1 August, 2019

Danish Air Transport (DAT) CEO Jesper Rungholm stated the EU's Flight Compensation Regulation 261/2004, which establishes common rules on compensation and assistance, "poses the greatest threat to the safety of our passengers" (Travel News, 29-Jul-2019). Mr Rungholm added smaller European carriers "are so afraid of having to pay hefty compensation in the event of a delay that some crews or even mechanics may miss the necessary, compliant care in case of doubt". Danish Air Transport's compensation payments increased to over EUR2 million in 2018, from under EUR400,000 in 2017.
