DHMI: Claims Istanbul Airport located on bird migration path 'unfounded'

7 August, 2019

DHMI refuted (01-Aug-2019) claims Istanbul Airport is located on bird migration paths and adversely affects navigation as "unfounded". According to media reports, the airport is located along a stork migration path passing through the Bosphorus every autumn, increasing the frequency of bird strikes and leading to an increase in delays, cancellations and diversions (Stuttgarter Nachrichten, 05-Aug-2019). DHMI stated services are "diverted all over the world for many reasons, especially in adverse weather conditions... the number of diversions experienced in Istanbul Airport due to adverse weather conditions and other reasons does not in any way exceed that of similar airports in the world and is even lower than in many international airports".
