LATAM: 'It becomes more expensive to do business in Brazil when conventions are not respected'

27 March, 2019

LATAM Airlines Brazil CEO Jerome Cadier commented on the Brazilian Justice System's disregard for the Cape Town Convention, stating the convention was not respected from the moment Avianca Brazil declared judicial recovery (Folha, 26-Mar-2019). Mr Cadier added that the judge on the matter "excessively" protected Avianca Brazil by not returning their aircraft to lessors. He stated: "It becomes more expensive to do business in Brazil when conventions are not respected… If you have aircraft and assets and will place it in Brazil, you'll think twice now because you can't recover them and don't get paid… It creates a doubt about what is worth in Brazil, what are the rules?".
