Ryanair CEO: Job losses 'unavoidable' as carrier deals with MAX delivery delays

1 August, 2019

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary, in a video message to staff, stated up to 900 jobs may be affected due to Boeing 737 MAX delivery delays (Bloomberg, 31-Jul-2019). Mr O'Leary said Ryanair has an excess of more than 500 pilots and around 400 cabin crew and 600 fewer staff across both categories will be required over summer 2020 if the MAX delays are not addressed. He added: "We over the next couple of weeks will be doing our very best to minimise job losses, but some are unavoidable at this time". As previously reported by CAPA, Ryanair already indicated MAX delays could lead to the closure of under performing bases in winter 2019/2020 and into summer 2020.
