26 July, 2019

Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly stated (25-Jul-2019) the carrier expects ASMs to decrease between 2% to 3% year-on-year in 3Q2019 and between 1% to 2% in FY2019, due to the "extensive delays" in returning the Boeing 737 MAX to service. The carrier originally planned for FY2019 ASMs to increase 5%. Due to the decrease in ASMs, Mr Kelly stated the carrier will "cease operations" at New York Newark Liberty International Airport and consolidate operations at New York LaGuardia Airport, effective 03-Nov-2019. He noted financial results at New York Newark have been "below expectations". [more - original PR]
