Thailand's Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob has given permission for Thai Airways to purchase and lease 38 new aircraft, for an estimated THB136 billion (USD4.4 billion), despite objections from the workers' union (Bangkok Post, 06-Aug-2019). Mr Chidchob stated: "If we don't invest and instead let the business run at a loss, it will stay like that". As previously reported by CAPA, Thai Airways' workers union president Damrong Waikanee said the carrier's plan to acquire 38 new aircraft is "almost impossible to implement" due to staff shortages, adding the acquisition may negatively affect the airline's finances.
