Cleveland Hopkins Airport to redevelop international arrivals zone ahead of Icelandair route launch

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (Ohio) plans to redevelop its international arrivals area, in anticipation of Icelandair's Keflavik service in May-2018 (cleveland.com, 25-Jan-2018). Cleveland Hopkins Airport will reinstall Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening points in the customs area, to remove the need of buses to transport arriving passengers from the secure side of the airport to baggage claim. The change would enable passengers to pass through security before exiting through Concourse A.

Emirates to increase Ft Lauderdale and Orlando frequency, commence nonstop Newark service

Emirates announced (25-Jan-2018) changes to the following US services:

  • Dubai-Fort Lauderdale and Dubai-Orlando: Increase frequency from five times weekly to daily, effective 25-Mar-2018. The frequency increases reflect "the steady rebound in customer demand";
  • Dubai-New York JFK: Reduce frequency from three times daily to twice daily, effective 25-Mar-2018. The airline will continue daily Dubai-Milan Malpensa-New York JFK service;
  • Dubai-New York Newark: Commence daily nonstop service on 01-Jun-2018. The airline will operate the service with Boeing 777-300ER equipment, configured with eight first class, 42 business class and 306 economy class seats and offering 19 tonnes of cargo capacity. The carrier also operates daily Dubai-Athens-Newark service.

Emirates said nonstop Newark service will be "a boon for ethnic communities" and will offer a one stop connection to nine cities in India for the nearly 700,000 Indian Americans in the greater New York area. The airline noted 67 of its more than 80 destinations in Africa, Asia Pacific and the Middle East are not directly served by any US carrier and commented: "The breadth of our network between the US and India is unparalleled". American Airlines will 'enter 2018 with strong momentum': CEO

American Airlines CEO Doug Parker stated (25-Jan-2018) "2017 was a remarkable year for American Airlines", as the airline reported pre tax profit of USD3.1 billion for FY2017. Mr Parker noted "progress as a company as we continued to make significant investments in our team members, product and operation". He said the airline will "enter 2018 with strong momentum". Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway airports handle record combined 102m pax in 2017

Chicago O'Hare Airport and Chicago Midway Airport handled (24-Jan-2018) a combined record 102 million passengers in 2017, surpassing the previous record set in 2016, according to Chicago Department of Aviation. Chicago O'Hare handled a record 79.8 million passengers, a 2.4% increase year-on-year. Chicago Midway also handled a record 22.4 million passengers. Alaska Airlines CEO; '2017 was a great year'

Alaska Airlines CEO Brad Tilden stated (25-Jan-2018) "2017 was a great year". Mr Tilden said the airline "invested in our route network, our fleet, our product, and laid the foundation for our future". Avianca to launch three times daily Lima-Mendoza service

Avianca announced (24-Jan-2018) plans to launch three times daily Lima-Mendoza service, effective 01-Apr-2018, operating with 150 seat A320 aircraft. Ryanair to expand Manchester base with three additional aircraft and 10 services

Ryanair announced (25-Jan-2018) plans to expand Manchester Airport operations with a USD300 million investment, three additional aircraft at the base and the launch of the following 10 services from summer 2018:

  • Agadir: Twice weekly;
  • Almeria: Twice weekly;
  • Barcelona: Twice weekly;
  • Belfast: Daily from Mar-2018;
  • Cagliari: Twice weekly;
  • Palermo: Twice weekly;
  • Ponta Delgada: Weekly;
  • Porto: Three times weekly;
  • Rhodes: Twice weekly;
  • Venice: Three times weekly.

The carrier will add 300,00 seats on Manchester services and increase the fleet at the base to 12 aircraft. Ryanair will also increase Alicante, Bologna, Chania, Faro, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Lisbon, Malaga, Mallorca, Naples and Tenerife frequencies. [more - original PR]

JetBlue to modernise A320 fleet interiors

JetBlue plans to modernise its A320 fleet interiors, adding new seats with adjustable headrests, in seat power, improved televisions and LED lighting (Skift, 25-Jan-2018). JetBlue's A320 seat capacity will increase from 150 to 162. According to the CAPA Fleet Database, JetBlue has 183 A320 aircraft in service and 95 orders. JetBlue CFO Steve Priest said it may require up to 36 months to complete aircraft modernisation.

Airnorth check in to temporarily move at Melbourne Tullamarine T4 Terminal

Airnorth stated (25-Jan-2018) all check in operations will be moved to a temporary location within Melbourne Tullamarine T4 terminal from 30-Jan-2018 to 09-Feb-2018 due to modification works on the baggage belt of each counter. The temporary location will be from a mobile check in cart at the southern end of the Jetstar check in area. The Airnorth check in counter is expected to resume its normal positioning next to Regional Express (Rex) to the far left of Terminal 4 when maintenance work cease. [more - original PR]

Aeromexico reinforces operations to Europe

Aeromexico plans to reinforce frequencies to Europe during high season 2018 (El Universal, 24-Jan-2018). Changes are detailed as follows:

  • Mexico City-Madrid: Frequency increase from eight to 13 times weekly, effective Jun-2018;
  • Mexico City-Paris: Frequency increase from seven to 10 times weekly, effective Jun-2018.

The carrier already increased operations to London and Amsterdam.
