Erbil Airport confirms suspension of international operations until end of Feb-2018

Erbil International Airport, via its official Twitter account, confirmed (27/28-Dec-2017) the suspension of all international services at Erbil and Sulaymaniyah International Airport by the Iraq Civil Aviation Authority will remain in place until 28-Feb-2018. Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani said the regional government is ready to discuss the issue of control of airports in Iraqi Kurdistan with Iraq's Government.

Ethiopian Airlines considers Zhengzhou service

Ethiopian Airlines regional director for China, Mongolia and North Korea Yared Berta said the carrier is considering Zhengzhou services (Xinhua, 28-Dec-2017). "Zhengzhou is one of the most populous areas of China, and an increasing attraction for domestic and international investment, presenting opportunities for ET especially in cargo flights", he stated. As previously reported by CAPA, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde GebreMariam also stated the carrier plans to launch Shenzhen service in Jun-2018. The carrier is also considering Hangzhou and Chongqing services.

Alitalia to resume Rome Fiumicino-Milan Malpensa service

Alitalia plans to resume Rome Fiumicino-Milan Malpensa service, effective 01-Apr-2018 (Routes Online, 28-Dec-2017). Alitalia plans to operate the route four times daily with CityLiner Embraer 175 equipment. According to OAG, Meridiana also serves the route.

Mauritius holds aviation talks with seven countries, signs air services agreements

Mauritius' Government announced (28-Dec-2017) its delegation at the ICAO International Conference on Air Services Negotiations, held in Colombo from 04-Dec-2017 to 08-Dec-2017, achieved the following:

  • Signed a bilateral air services agreement with Sri Lanka;
  • Initialled bilateral air services agreements and signed corresponding MoUs with Ghana, Morocco and Namibia;
  • Agreed minutes and a codeshare framework agreement with Chile;
  • Signed a MoU with Russia on provisions for codeshare rights between the designated airlines of Mauritius and Russia and airlines of any third country;

Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport opens new international business lounge

Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport launched (28-Dec-2017) a new 664sqm international business lounge at terminal D. The lounge will operate round the clock and is outfitted with 117 seats, restaurant areas, European and Asian style buffet, free high speed WiFi connectivity and widescreen TVs. Alitalia negotiations to begin in mid Jan-2018

Italy's Minister for Economic Development Carlo Calenda confirmed the Government has received three offers for Alitalia and plans to begin negotiations in Jan-2018 (la Repubblica/Corriere Della Sera, 27-Dec-2017). Mr Calenda stated: "Three offers on the former national airline, we will evaluate them very carefully and in mid-January we will start exclusive negotiations".

Qatar Airways outlines 2017 achievements and plans for 2018

Qatar Airways highlighted (27-Dec-2017) the following achievements in 2017, its 20th year of operations:

  • Route expansion: Launched services to 11 new destinations, comprising Auckland, Nice, Dublin, Skopje, Sohar, Kiev, Prague, Sarajevo, Adana, Chiang Mai and St Petersburg. Increased frequency to Bangkok, Krabi, Warsaw, Helsinki, Moscow, Prague and Kiev. Deployed A380 to Melbourne and A350 to the Maldives;
  • Fleet expansion: Received 19 new aircraft in 2017, expanding fleet to 212 aircraft. Changed order for 50 A320neos to 50 A321neos with Airbus Cabin Flex in Dec-2017;
  • Qatar Airways Cargo reported "high" volumes, revenue, yield and market share and was "the only international cargo carrier with significant growth in freight tonnes kilometres" in 2017. Received two Boeing 747-8Fs and a 13th 777F. Commenced Pittsburgh service in Oct-2017. Also commenced Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Quito, Miami, Phnom Penh and Yangon freighter services. Opened dedicated climate control centre and cargo overflow structure in summer 2017;
  • Launched 'Qsuite' business class cabin in Mar-2017. Introduced on Doha-London service in summer 2017, followed by Paris and New York services;
  • Acquired a 9.61% stake in Cathay Pacific in Nov-2017 and a 49% stake in AQA Holding, the parent company of Meridiana;
  • Revenue increased 10.4% year-on-year and net profit grew 21.7% in FY2016/17;
  • 2018: The airline will commence Pattaya, Penang, Canberra, Thessaloniki, Cardiff and nonstop Hanoi services; increase Ho Chi Minh City frequency; deploy A380 equipment to Perth; introduce 'Qsuite' on Washington service; and take delivery of first A350-1000 aircraft as launch customer.

Nepal Airlines designated to operate to Osaka, Seoul, Riyadh

Nepal's Civil Aviation Ministry designated three international long haul routes for Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) to serve after it receives its two widebody aircraft over the next six months (The Kathmandu Post, 27-Dec-2017). NAC has been approved to operate service to Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia, designed designated four weekly services on Kathmandu-Osaka and Kathmandu-Seoul routes, and daily on Kathmandu-Riyadh route.

Denmark's Government declines tender offer, will not reduce stake in Copenhagen Airports

Copenhagen Airports stated (27-Dec-2017) it was informed that Denmark's Government has no intention of reducing its current ownership share of 39.2% and therefore declined the mandatory tender offer put forward by Copenhagen Airports Denmark ApS on 08-Dec-2017 as a consequence of the transaction between Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund III, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and Arbejdsmarkedets Tillægspension.
