NSW premier promotes Vivid 2018 in Japan to build on tourism numbers

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian invited (22-Aug-2017) a Japanese travel trade delegation to visit the 'Vivid Sydney' event in 2018, as part of a plan to build on the record number of tourists who took part in the 2017 festival. In 2017, 5062 Vivid Sydney packages were sold to visitors from Japan, up 7.5% year-on-year. Japan is the sixth largest market for international visitors to NSW. In the year ended Mar-2017, NSW welcomed 165,000 Japanese visitors who stayed 3.1 million nights and contributed an estimated AUD339 million (USD267.5 million) to the NSW visitor economy. Air New Zealand experimenting with future technologies such as augmented reality

Air New Zealand chief digital officer Avi Golan reported (22-Aug-2017) the company is "experimenting with potential enhancements of the future" including the idea of cabin crew using the Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality viewers onboard aircraft. The carrier has partnered with CommBank in a five day experiment utilising Chip CANdroid, providing passengers at Sydney Airport with the opportunity to use the bank's social humanoid robot, which will interact with and assist them with check in and at the gate prior to boarding. London Gatwick Airport pledges to operate at least 5% electric vehicles by 2020

London Gatwick Airport joined (17-Aug-2017) Go Ultra Low's 'Go Ultra Low Companies' programme, pledging to operate at least 5% electric vehicles across its airside, ground handling and passenger services fleet by 2020. RwandAir adds six destinations from Cotonou hub

RwandAir announced (21-Aug-2017) plans to commence services from its new hub in Cotonou to Abidjan, Brazzaville and Libreville, effective 30-Aug-2017, and Bamako, Conakry and Dakar, effective 30-Sep-2017. Cotonou operations will be synchronised with services from Kigali to enable connections with the rest of the airline's network. The new services will expand RwandAir's network to 26 destinations. Russia's Foreign Affairs Minister notes progress in work on resumption of Egypt service

Russia's Minister for Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov noted (21-Aug-2017) some progress in the work of specialists on the resumption of air service between Russia and Egypt. Qantas: New airport security arrangements would not lead to higher airfares

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said he does not expect airfares to increase in the next 10 years due to any additional charges to improve security at Australian airports (AAP, 21-Aug-2017). Qantas will move to implement any additional security measures and intends to do so in a fashion that does not require it to raise fares, according to Mr Joyce. He added that security and the travelling experience is a "shared responsibility across airlines and airports" and "we have to make sure we have the resources to make sure the travelling experience is still very good, and the security experience is what the government and professionals tell us to implement".

Icelandair announces schedule for Tampa service commencing 06-Sep-2017

Melbourne Airport to invest 'half a billion dollars' p/a over next decade on development works

Melbourne Tullamarine Airport CEO Lyell Strambi estimated (21-Aug-2017) the airport will invest "on average, more than half a billion dollars per year, every year" over the next decade to 2027 on development works to "improve, maintain and grow" the airport. Mr Strambi added: "The most important part of that investment will be building our third runway, which will increase capacity from our current limit of around 55 movements per hour, to more than 90 movements per hour". Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region double number of business and tourism events

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) director of business and tourism events Rosie Douglas reported (21-Aug-2017) Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef doubled the number of business events secured in 2016-17 for the destination, confirmed 46 corporate and association business events, which will bring a AUD45 million (USD35.7 million) into the regional economy. International clients are mainly from China, North America and New Zealand, with their events to be held through to 2020. Ms Douglas reported "Almost half of both the secured events and the leads were international clients wanting to take advantage of increased flight access to Cairns and the competitive Australian dollar". Tourism Council WA welcomes new cooperative marketing campaign

Tourism Council WA welcomed (21-Aug-2017) an AUD2 million (USD1.6 million) funding announcement by the West Australian State Government to re-prioritise tourism in the state budget through a cooperative marketing campaign. Under the campaign Tourism WA work with cooperative marketing partners such as airlines, travel agents and travel websites to offer incentives for people to travel now and take advantage of reasonable hotel rates, targeting markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, China, Sydney and Melbourne which have short lead times for bookings. Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the state is "in the midst of a tourism and hospitality downturn" and with "thousands of hotel rooms either recently completed or in the pipeline, a significant increase in leisure visitors is needed to fill them".
