Rex reveals new regional network strategy

    Regional Express (Rex) announced (22-Feb-2021) the following plans to undertake a major revamp of its regional route network, due to “aggressive predatory moves by Qantas into thin regional routes services by Rex”:

    • Rex plans to suspend services to the following destinations once government support through the Regional Airline Network Support programme has ended in Mar-2021:
      • Sydney-Bathurst;
      • Sydney-Cooma;
      • Sydney-Lismore;
      • Sydney-Grafton;
      • Adelaide-Kangaroo Island;
    • Rex plans to launch the following services where Virgin Australia has retreated and Qantas remains the sole or dominant operator:
      • Sydney-Coffs Harbour;
      • Sydney-Port Macquarie;
    • Services under consideration, where Qantas is the sole or dominant carrier, include:
      • Sydney-Tamworth;
      • Perth-Geraldton;
      • Melbourne-Devonport;
      • Sydney-Canberra.

    Rex called on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to take enforcement actions against Qantas for its predatory behaviour… the ACCC must do its part to ensure that the dominant carrier does not take advantage of the current situation”.
