Statistics New Zealand: Arrivals/departures decline due to travel bubble suspensions

13 September, 2021

Statistics New Zealand stated (10-Sep-2021) arrivals and departures across the New Zealand border fell in Jul-2021 compared to the previous two months, due to ongoing interruptions to quarantine free travel with Australia. Total movements across the New Zealand border in Jul-2021 were 147,900. This is down from 189,500 in May-2021 and 175,500 in Jun-2021. Trans-Tasman travel made up almost three-quarters of all New Zealand border crossings in Jul-2021. Of those who specified the main country visited in Jul-2021, 63% were returning from a trip to Australia and 30% from the Cook Islands. Approximately 70% of the New Zealand resident arrivals returning from Australia in Jul-2021 were visiting friends and relatives, and 16% travelled for holiday and vacation. Of those returning from the Cook Islands, 92% were on holiday and vacation, and 5% were visiting friends and relatives. [more - original PR]
