Timaru Richard Pearse Airport mulling new ILS for better cover during adverse weather

6 November, 2017

New Zealand's Timaru district Mayor Damon Odey confirmed consideration of new instrument landing system (ILS) technology at Timaru Richard Pearse Airport to facilitate operations during adverse weather and fog (Stuff, 06-Nov-2017). Mr Odey said while "of course" the technology would be beneficial, financing implementation would require substantial council investment. "Other international airports would be higher up the list then us", he added. Timaru District Council infrastructure group manager Ashley Harper added: "Auckland Airport is the only one in the country with a Category 3 low visibility landing system and, although fog delays are an annoyance for people, around 97 per cent of flights arrive and depart on schedule".
