United CEO calls for congestion issues at Newark Airport be addressed

26 July, 2021

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby submitted a letter requesting the US Department of Transportation and the US FAA address congestion issues due to a runway repair project at New York Newark Liberty International Airport (Reuters, 23-Jul-2021). Mr Kirby asked the parties to "temporarily and proportionally reduce the number of operations per hour" during Aug-2021 and Sep-2021. A US FAA spokesperson stated the agency is "reviewing" the letter and will respond to United directly. The carrier operates around 65% of all flights at Newark, which was the 15th busiest airport in the US in 2020 in terms of total passengers.
