Sydney is already transforming into a low-carbon city that diverts waste from landfill, saves potable water, is connected with green parklands and spaces, and buildings that feature outstanding environmental performance. Last year its efforts were rewarded when it received top honours in a global sustainability report, scoring highest in the Asia Pacific region.
The accolade came from the Carbon Disclosure Project, CDP, which provides one of the most comprehensive collection of self-reported environmental data in the world. The data collected by the company is used to create detailed analysis on environmental risks, impacts and opportunities and ranks more than 570 cities to identify those excelling on climate disclosure. In its 2018 report Sydney received a top score alongside Cleveland, Durban, Mexico City and Paris.
Through its Sustainable Sydney 2030 strategy it has set itself some of the most ambitious sustainability targets in the world and as such has been recognised around the world as a leader in improving the impact industries have on the environment.
The programme's latest idea is to tackle the growing impact of accommodation providers by asking corporate travel buyers to include rating requirements in RFPs.
