Hyatt grows its brand presence in Qatar as Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha becomes its third hotel in the country

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has revealed plans for the Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha property, which will mark the first Hyatt Regency branded hotel in Qatar and the third Hyatt hotel in the country, further building on Hyatt's growing portfolio in the Middle East. The 400-room hotel is owned by Qatar Airways' subsidiary Dhiafatina Hotels and is currently trading as the Oryx Rotana Hotel. It is due to take up its new title on 15-Sep-2020 and joins the Park Hyatt Doha and Grand Hyatt Doha Hotel & Villas in the city. The Hyatt Regency brand prides itself on "making travel free from stress and filled with success" and this new location will appeal to both business and leisure travellers with over 10,700 square feet of meeting and event facilities, including a state-of-the-art business centre, two ballrooms and eleven modern meeting and conference rooms making it attractive for events and conventions.


Marriott International to bring traditional luxury to the south of Brazil through W Hotels growth

Marriott International has signed an agreement with KJP Participaçoes to bring the W Hotels brand to Gramado, a mountain resort town in the Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul. The property will be the second W Hotel to open in country and the fourth in the Southern Cone of Latin America. The 80 room hotel, W Gramado, will be located in the Swiss Village, the highest point of Gramado, known for exceptional views into the valley and hills beyond the city centre. The property borders Orchids Park and is located less than one mile from the main attractions of Gramado. The hotel, which is due to open in 1Q 2023, is planned to occupy a single four-storey building with sustainable architecture with vegetation features that are indigenous to Orchids Park. An adjacent W Residences will be developed in a cluster of low-rise buildings within walking distance of the hotel.


Radisson debuts in the Maldives with arrival of its Radisson Blu upper upscale brand

Radisson Hotel Group has revealed its first property in the Maldives with the opening of the Radisson Blu Resort Maldives - a private island retreat in the Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. Nestled on Huruelhi Island and one other pristine islet, the upper-upscale property is accessible directly via a 30-minute seaplane direct to the resort from Malé's Velana International Airport or a 20-minute domestic flight from Malé to Maamigili Airport followed by a 15-minute speedboat ride. All 128 beachfront or overwater villas ranging from 215 to 790 square meters feature private pools, ocean views, state-of-the-art amenities and one, two or three bedrooms. Radisson Blu Resort Maldives joins an expanding collection of Radisson Blu hotels and resorts in many of the world's key business and leisure markets. In Asia Pacific, this contemporary upper-upscale brand is now present in ten countries: Australia, Bangladesh, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and the Maldives.


Data metrics - latest performance insights from STR

  • There has been a continued steady rise in hotel performance in Canada but the same significant level of year-over-year declines remain, based on data for the week commencing 19-Jul-2020. In comparison with the week commencing 21-Jul-2019, occupancy was down -54.6% to 35.4%, ADR fell -30.5% to CAD126.07 and RevPAR declined -68.4% to CAD44.66. Only two provinces reached a 40% occupancy level - British Columbia (46.1%) and Manitoba (41.8%) - while Ottawa (32.6%) and Vancouver (32.2%) were the only major markets at or above the 30% mark.
  • Hotel performance in the United States of America showed slightly higher occupancy and room rates during the week commencing 19-Jul-2020 when compared with the previous week. US hotel occupancy has risen week over week for 14 of the last 15 weeks, although growth in demand (room nights sold) has slowed. In comparison with the week commencing 21-Jul-2019, occupancy was down more than a third, falling -37.9% to 48.1%, ADR fell -27.3% to USD99.24 and RevPAR was down -54.8% to USD47.75. Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia, was the only one of the country's Top 25 Markets to reach a 60% occupancy level (66.1%), while Detroit, Michigan (55.2%); Atlanta, Georgia (50.5%); Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-New Jersey (50.4%); and San Diego, California (50.0%) were the only examples to reach or surpass 50% occupancy.

  • BCD Travel has reached agreement with SAP Concur to expand integration between BCD's proprietary hotel platform and the Custom Hotel Sourcing functionality, providing its customers access to further content, booking and payment options. Under this agreement, BCD customers will gain the ability to source more hotel properties, shop across a greater mix of competitive hotel rates, and leverage the intelligence of BCD's hotel platform - all while staying within company policy and travel programme goals.
  • Bedsonline, a global provider of accommodation and complementary travel products for travel agents, has launched 'The Compass', a new online tool to support travel agency recovery efforts. The platform harnesses Bedsonline's live data intelligence to provide travel agents with insights on the top current trending destinations in their source market as well as providing data on changes in the trends versus previous weeks; average booking lead times; and a selection of the top properties available, featuring the very best rates and conditions.
  • Frasers Hospitality has opened Fraser Suites Akasaka a new property offering serviced apartments in the Japanese capital, Tokyo. Located in a 22-storey building in Tokyo's Central Business District it comprises 224 rooms, including fully furnished deluxe rooms, studios and one-bedroom apartments.
  • The hospitality sector in India has recorded a year-on-year -43.5% decline in RevPAR for 1H 2020, according to latest research from real estate services company JLL. All 11 markets in India reported a decrease in year-over-year RevPAR performance in 2Q, according to the 'Hotel Momentum India (HMI) Q2 2020' report.
  • Following the reopening of Maldivian borders to international visitors on 15-Jul-2020, Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation has announced that 146 of its 156 resorts will reopen to guests by the end of Oct-2020 following health and safety measures set out by the Ministry of Tourism. Over 40 resorts have already opened and during Aug-2020 a further 28 will open their doors to the public, with 29 more following in Sep-2020 and an additional 46 in Oct-2020.
  • Davidson Hotels & Resorts has announced the upcoming opening of Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs, the first Margaritaville resort on the US west coast. Located in the heart of the Uptown Design District, a historic playground for old-and-new Hollywood's elite, the resort is expected to open in autumn 2020. Following a renovation and conversion of the pre-existing Riviera Palm Springs, the transformed resort will include 398-rooms, multiple Margaritaville-inspired dining options with indoor and outdoor seating and the city's largest resort spa.
  • The new Mbano Manor Hotel brings a luxury boutique hotel experience to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. The new all-suite premium luxury hotel was formally launched this month as part of the country's National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy. Located on Old Kazungula road, on the edge of town, it features19 suites, including a masterpiece Forest Villa all located over a four acre site in a teak forest setting adjacent to Zambezi National Park.
  • Hotel management developer MJM Group has opened its seventh Marriott brand hotel in North Carolina. Its new Courtyard by Marriott is the second hotel in the Charlotte Steele Creek, NC market. This four-storey property offers 118 rooms and includes four meeting rooms totalling almost 1,240 square feet.
  • Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort re-opened its doors to local Hawaii residents in Jul-2020 and is gearing up for the return of international arrivals as the islands ease quarantine restrictions on trans-Pacific travellers, currently expected from Sep-2020. Located on the 90,000-acre-island of Lana'i, the luxury wellbeing resort unites the wellness expertise of Sensei with a grounding sense of place and renowned Four Seasons hospitality.
