DATA SPOTLIGHT: Beijing Daxing International Airport

22 October, 2020

This year the Corporate Travel Community (CTC) will feature some topical insights into the world's airlines, airports and country markets. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot at where they sit today in the Covid-19 impacted world, we look at Beijing Daxing International Airport, which opened this time last year to bring significant new capacity into the Beijing airport system.

Works to develop Daxing International commenced in Dec-2014 and were completed in Jun-2019. The airport is equipped with four runways, one 700,000 square metre passenger terminal and 268 aircraft parking stands. In the past year -the toughest ever for the air transport industry - the airport has grown from sitting just within China's top 50 by domestic capacity to now being one place outside the top ten. This month's scheduled departure capacity is almost two million monthly seats, five times the level seen in its first month of operation.

China's economic recovery is growing in momentum after being the first to suffer the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its economy expanded +4.9% in 3Q 2020 compared to a year ago, according to government statistics released this week. The pace was quicker than the +3.2% increase recorded in 2Q 2020 as China successfully navigated from the pandemic-fuelled recession that has gripped much of the globe.
