It is that reason that the nation has been hit particularly hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and in particular China’s restrictions on international travel. In fact the Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association has forecast Cambodia's tourism industry will recover by 20% if the pandemic is contained by the end of 2020, but could take until 2025 to fully recover.
Pacific Asia Tourism Association Cambodia Chapter chairman Thourn Sinan echoes that view and says Cambodia will need at least four to five years to see tourism growth return to normal levels with the warning that recover levels in 2021 and 2022 may only reach around 30%.
Cambodia's Minister of Tourism Thong Khon says that the domestic market and local travel “will not be sustainable in the long term” and the country’s Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on ASEAN economies to “establish a clear and prudent rehabilitation plan by introducing scenarios for gradually launching of cross border travel and trade between countries".
