DATA SPOTLIGHT: Copenhagen Kastrup Airport

Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot at where they sit today in the Covid-19 impacted world, we look at Copenhagen Kastrup Airport, the main international air gateway into Denmark.

As a major hub into Denmark and the wider Scandinavian and Nordic regions, the airport has seen traffic collapse due to the Covid-19 crisis and its CCO, Peter Krogsgaard, has acknowledged international air transport is facing a "crisis of historic proportions".

"While we thought things couldn't get any worse, the situation has in fact deteriorated even further since the start of the autumn season, and the opportunities to travel are being reduced evermore," he said earlier this month as the airport reported that aircraft load factor had also deteriorated from 60% in Jul-2020 to 40% by the end of Sep-2020.

In its Sep-2020 performance review the airport describes Danish aviation as "in freefall" with travellers at the airport plunging to a mere 473,509 in the month, -83.1% fewer than the same month last year. That decline is set to continue in the short-term with only six of the world's 195 countries currently on Denmark's 'yellow' list, i.e. countries to which the authorities do not advise against travel.

The coronavirus situation has ultimately caused the loss of 16.4 million travellers at Copenhagen Airport. "Every time a new travel advisory is released, the numbers of air travellers to the relevant destinations are cut by half very quickly. This is eroding the entire foundation for air traffic," explains Mr Krogsgaard.

He believes the greatest challenge remains the uncertainty prevailing about rules and guidelines in Europe and backs industry calls for rapid testing until a vaccine is developed and sustainably delivered.

"It's difficult to know which rules apply in the respective countries. Obviously, the ultimate solution is a vaccine that can eliminate Covid-19, but until it's found and ready to be made available, a common European before-you-fly-test with rapid results would be a good solution. It would allow Danes to travel to Europe, and Europeans to travel to Denmark without increasing the risk of infection," he says.
