DATA SPOTLIGHT: Frankfurt Airport

Fraport, which operates the airport, says passenger traffic has now started to recover with the partial lifting of travel restrictions since mid Jun-2020, however this has progressed "at a very slow pace," according to chairman and CEO Dr Stefan Schulte. "At our home base in Frankfurt, weekly passenger figures are currently still around 79% below the previous year's level", Dr Schulte continued, adding that uncertainty over ongoing travel restrictions and rising infection rates "poses major challenges to our company and the entire industry".

The airport's largest operator, flag carrier Lufthansa, has outlined plans to further boost its activities through Aug-2020, but Mr Schulte warns it will still be some time before the hub airport sees traffic levels return to pre-Covid-19 levels. In fact, even in 2022/2023 he projects passenger volumes at Frankfurt Airport will to be around 15% to 20% below the high recorded in 2019.
