DATA SPOTLIGHT: Japan

7 April, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot, we look at Japan, where Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has declared a state of emergency in the capital Tokyo, port city Osaka and five other prefectures - Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Fukuoka and Hyogo.

This is set to last about a month and will allow the governors of the prefectures to close schools and businesses, but authorities will not have the legal powers to order citizens to stay at home, simply the legal backing to request that they do so. It follows a model widely adopted by other global nations in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, but some local medical experts have suggested the move has come too late.

Japan currently has a relatively small number of infections compared to other countries, but there are concerns a sudden surge in cases in Tokyo could lead to a major outbreak in the world's biggest city and quickly spread across the rest of the country.
