While we all have heard about the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, it is actually the event further north in Brazil in the city of Salvador that is home to the biggest street party in the world. Alongside this title, Salvador, the capital of Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia, is known for its Portuguese colonial architecture, Afro-Brazilian culture and a tropical coastline.
Throughout Brazilian history Salvador has played an important role. Its location on Brazil's northeastern coast, means served as an important link in the Portuguese empire throughout the colonial era, maintaining close commercial ties with Portugal and Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia. In fact it for a long time was Brazil’s preeminent city.
It is now Brazil’s fourth largest city, but its air connectivity has fallen a long way behind that seen in the larger cities of Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo. But one week every year the city comes alive as it hosts the Bahian Carnival. Its dimensions are gigantic as almost four million people celebrate through Salvador’s streets, avenues, and squares.
Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães Airport serves the city of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil’s first capital and now the largest city in the Northeast and seventh largest metro area in the country. The airport is a joint civil/military facility, also encompassing Salvador Air Force Base. Brazil’s four major carriers all have a significant presence at the airport, with a selection of US and European carriers also providing services. Vinci Airports assumed management of operations from Infraero on 02-Jan-2018.
