DATA SPOTLIGHT: Taiwan

16 June, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot, we look at Taiwan, where a domestic recovery could shortly be followed by growing international connectivity.

The country has been actively looking at developing air bridges with other countries to resume international flights, but minister of health and welfare Chen Shih-chung said this month that only a few countries could meet the country's requirements for resuming services, adding that New Zealand and Vietnam are the most likely countries to open up in the first wave.

In the domestic market, data from OAG shows that air capacity has recovered to levels around 70% of those seen last year. Taiwan's ministry of transportation and communications last week further relaxed coronavirus control measures on trains and domestic flights.

It now permits passengers to eat on trains and domestic flights, once social distancing is observed or neighbouring passengers are wearing masks, while beverage services have now been resumed. However, if proper social distancing cannot be maintained inflight, passengers will still be required to wear a mask for the entire flight.
