The airport is the main gateway into Yinchuan, the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the historical former capital of the Western Xia Empire of the Tanguts. Whilst many of us would not be able to point to the city on a map, it is actually one of the smartest cities in the world and is intended to serve as the blueprint "smart city" for scores of urban metropolises across China.
Yinchuan lies in the middle of the Ningxia Plain, sheltered from the deserts of Mongolia by the high ranges of the Helan Mountains to its west with the Yellow River running through from southwest to northeast. It may not currently have any international services, but its domestic activity is on the rise, reportedly handling 20,100 passengers and 217 aircraft movements during the 04-Apr-2020 to 06-Apr-2020 Qingming Festival period, according to local reports. Its current domestic offering may not take it back to 2019 levels, but it is up above what was recorded in 2017.
Yinchuan Hedong International Airport (formally Yinchuan Hedong Airport) serves Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia.
