EMEA appointment highlights of the month – January/February 2019

The travel, tourism and aviation industries in the EMEA region witness policy and upper level changes on a daily basis. It is important to not only keep tabs of these organisations direction, but to also monitor changes in executive branches to see the wider picture of the travel market. The Blue Swan Daily will keep you informed of these movements each month, with a full wrap of the key changes in the EMEA market, while also looking forward to key appointments announced for the last couple of months.

Here are the key executive changes for January/February 2019:

  • Air Atlanta Icelandic appointed Baldvin M Hermannsson as CEO. Mr Hermannsson joined the airline in 2001 and replaces Hannes Hilmarsson in the role. Mr Hilmarsson has been appointed as Air Atlantic Icelandic executive chairman and Northern Lights Leasing MD;
  • Vueling director international markets and former SkyEurope CCO Krassimir Tanev was appointed LEVEL Austria (Anisec GmbH) MD. Anisec also appointed general manager operations and former NIKI chief pilot Frank Glander as co MD, effective 17-Dec-2018;
  • Birmingham Airport appointed Nicholas Barton as director, effective 22-Jan-2019;
  • FABEC appointed Pierre Jaeger as chairman of the FABEC council, effective 01-Jan-2019;
  • Icelandair announced the following appointments to its executive team on 06-Feb-2019:
    • Birna Osk Einarsdottir as chief customer experience officer. Ms Einarsdottir will lead the merged division, sales and customer experience, and will replace Gunmar Mar Sigurfinnsson as CCO. Mr Sigurfinnsson will become chief of Air freight and logistics;
    • Tomas Ingason as CIO of digital development and information technology and part of the executive management team;
    • Eva Soley Gudbjornsdottir as CFO, effective mid Feb-2019;
    • Ivar S Kristinsson as MD of fleet and route network;
    • Arni Hermannson as MD of Loftleidir Icelandic. Mr Hermannson will also join the executive management team;
    • Magnea Thorey Hjalmarsdottir will leave the executive management team;
    • Jens Bjarnason, MD of corporate affairs, will now work on an international investment project for the group.
  • Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) appointed Lorna Jack as chair of the board, effective 31-Jan-2019;
  • London Biggin Hill Airport appointed David Winstanley as CEO on 01-Mar-2019. Mr Winstanley was most recently COO at Birmingham Airport;
  • Transavia France appointed Sébastien Lemaire as chief information officer, effective Jan-2019;
  • Ryanair renewed CEO Michael O'Leary's contract for a further five years. Mr O'Leary will assume the newly created role of group CEO;
  • Air France-KLM appointed Angus Clarke as EVP strategy, effective 01-Feb-2019;
  • Airbus appointed Michael Schöllhorn as chief operating officer (COO) for Airbus Commercial Aircraft, effective 01-Feb-2019;
  • Kalaallit Airports announced CEO Steffen Ulrich-Lynge resigned on 05-Feb-2019. The board appointed CFO Peter Wistoft as interim CEO;
  • Zambia Airways' board appointed Bruk Endeshaw Abebe as CEO at the board's inaugural meeting on 07-Feb-2019;
  • Brussels Airlines announced plans to appoint Edi Wolfensberger as chief operating officer, effective 15-Apr-2019;
  • Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development appointed Siavash Amir-Makri as CEO of Iran Airports & Air Navigation Company;
  • Brussels South Charleroi Airport board appointed Philippe Verdonck as CEO. He succeeds Jean-Jacques Cloquet, who plans to pursue a new career path;
  • Cabo Verde Airlines appointed Jens Bjarnason as CEO following the acceptance of a binding offer by Loftleidir Cabo Verde to acquire a 51% stake in the airline;
  • Flybe CIO Peter Hauptvogel confirmed his departure from the airline in Mar-2019.
