Philippine Airlines becomes aggressive competitor in Sydney-London market

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has emerged as one of the most aggressive competitors on the kangaroo route between Sydney and London since rescheduling some of its Sydney flights in late 2015 to connect with London. PAL could potentially further increase its market share in the highly competitive Australia-Europe market in 2018 as it adds more flights to Australia and launches a second European destination.

Indonesia has taken a step backwards from liberalisation by forcing Singapore Airlines (SIA) to delay the launch of services between Jakarta and Sydney. Garuda has benefited from the delay and is adding capacity on the route.

It's the video which has shocked the entire world today, a passenger being forcibly being removed from United Flight 3411 departing Chicago's O'Hare Airport - purely for refusing to disembark a flight United had admitted to overbooking. While United is (ill-advisedly) standing by its procedures for overbooking flights and how it handled the situation, it does beg the question, is this happening all over the world?

Batik Air continues preparations for Australia launch

Indonesia's Batik Air is aiming to launch services to Australia in 2Q2017, following a lengthy preparation phase after securing Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approvals in late 2016. Batik, a full service airline under the Lion Group, plans to initially operate from Bali to Perth, providing new competition to AirAsia, Garuda and Jetstar.

Fukuoka Airport confirmed as the next airport in Japan to be privatised

Fukuoka Airport in Japan is next on the list for privatisation. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLITT) made the announcement at the end of Mar-2017, offering a 30-year concession to be made available by Apr-2019 with a minimum bid price of JPY161 billion (USD1.45 billion). Tender details will be released in May-2017 and it is intended that an operator will be appointed in May-2018.
