Delta Air Lines confirms new eVisas now available for customers travelling to Brazil

Delta Air Lines announced (11-Jan-2018) customers travelling to Brazil can now apply for a Brazilian visitor eVisa, which will be available for Japanese citizens from 11-Jan-2018, Canadians from 18-Jan-2018 and for US citizens from 25-Jan-2018. The eVisa is valid for a 90 day maximum stay in Brazil in a 12 month period and costs less than the traditional visa obtained at a consular office. [more - original PR]

Brazil launches e-visa for Japan; Canada and US to follow

Brazil launched an e-visa for Japanese passport holders, following implementation of the service for Australian passport holders in Nov-2017 (Panrotas, 11-Jan-2018). The facility will be further extended to Canadian and US citizens by the end of Jan-2018. Brazil's Ministry of Tourism revealed that half of Japanese travellers to Brazil had business, congresses or events as their main motivation.

IATA outlines fastest growing country pairs to 2036

IATA, via its official Twitter account, forecast (08-Jan-2018) the following country pairs will have the largest growth in passenger numbers by 2036:

  • India-UAE: 20.2 million additional passengers, averaging 5.9% annual growth;
  • China-Thailand: 19.1 million, 4.3%;
  • China-Korea: 17.7 million, 3.6%;
  • China-Singapore: 15 million, 7%;
  • US-Mexico: 14.9 million, 2.3%;
  • Indonesia-Malaysia: 12.6 million, 2.3%;
  • US-Canada: 12.3 million, 2.3%;
  • China-Chinese Taipei: 11.2 million, 2.3%;
  • China-US: 11 million, 2.3%;
  • India-US: 10.5 million, 2.3%.

Booking.com: Singapore was Australia's top international holiday destination for 2017

Booking.com revealed (10-Jan-2018) Australia's top booked domestic and international destinations in 2017, with Asian locations comprising six of the top 10 international destinations. The 10 most booked domestic destinations were Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Cairns, Hobart and Newcastle. The top 10 international destinations were Singapore, London, Auckland, Tokyo, Bangkok, Kuta (Bali), Seminyak (Bali), Hong Kong and Paris. [more - original PR]

Austrian Airlines to add one 777, launch Tokyo and Cape Town services in 2018

Austrian Airlines confirmed (11-Jan-2018) plans to add its 12th long haul aircraft, a Boeing 777-200 with 306 seats, in May-2018. The carrier subsequently plans to commence services to Tokyo from 15-May-2018 and Cape Town from 27-Oct-2018. CEO Kay Kratky said 150 employees will be hired "just to operate this one new aircraft". The carrier will expand staff by 600 in total in 2018, due to expansion of the medium haul fleet in 2017 and the planned transfer of pilots to Deutsche Lufthansa AG. Mr Kratky concluded: "We are currently looking for about 200 pilots, 300 flight attendants and 100 employees in the fields of aircraft maintenance and ground handling... ACI Asia Pacific president to retire in Jan-2018

Airports Council International (ACI) announced (11-Jan-2018) ACI Asia Pacific president Kerrie Mather plans to retire, effective 31-Jan-2018. Changi Airport Group CEO Lee Seow Hiang will serve as ACI Asia Pacific president for the remaining portion of Ms Mather's term. Cathay Pacific: No plans to launch Canberra services

Cathay Pacific responded to claims the carrier plans to launch Canberra services, stating: "We constantly monitor market demand in all regions and explore opportunities for route expansion. However, we currently have no plans in place to operate flights to Canberra" (Canberra Times, 10-Jan-2017). According to data from Australia's Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics, Cathay Pacific is the seventh largest passenger carrier and fourth largest freight carrier operating in the country.

Malaysian Ministry of Transport to resume search for MH370 in mid Jan-2018

Malaysia's Ministry of Transport, via its official Twitter and Facebook accounts, announced (09/10-Jan-2018) the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 will resume in mid Jan-2018, following a new agreement between the government and US agency Ocean Infinity. The Ministry said the agreement will operate on a "no find, no fee" basis. Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Plunkett said the initial search zone will focus on the area identified by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. Tourism Australia and Singapore Airlines launch joint digital campaign in Singapore and Malaysia

Tourism Australia and Singapore Airlines launched (10-Jan-2018) a new online campaign in Singapore and Malaysia promoting the airline's fares to Australia. Schiphol introduces Alipay

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport partnered (09-Jan-2018) with SIX Payment Services and Bovertis to deploy Alipay at airport shops, effective 01-Jan-2018.
