Qatar Airways and Airlink sign new codeshare agreement

Qatar Airways signed (27-Jun-2022) a comprehensive codeshare agreement with Airlink (South Africa) to enhance joint connectivity across 45 destinations, boosting links between southern Africa and the US, Europe and Asia. The new agreement expands Qatar Airways' southern African presence with new connections to Port Elizabeth, Hoedspruit, Skukuza and George as well as to points in BotswanaNamibiaZambiaZimbabwe and Mozambique. London City Airport survey shows business leaders eager to return to air travel

London City Airport commissioned (15-Jun-2022) a survey of more than 1000 business leaders across the UK, with 73% of respondents saying their company will use air travel in the next two years. Other findings included:

  • 47% of businesses which did not use air travel pre-pandemic are "likely" to over the next two years;
  • 67% of respondents said they would lose clients or contracts if their team was unable to fly;
  • Half or more of leaders in Scotland (54%), Northern Ireland (64%) and Wales (48%) said flying is essential to conduct business face to face.

The polling is part of a report published by WPI Economics, which suggests that a "speedy" return to business travel will boost the UK economy by GBP17.5 billion between 2022 and 2030. [more - original PR]

ACI EUROPE: Air connectivity across European airport network at 2009 recession levels

ACI EUROPE published (22-Jun-2022) its Airport Industry Connectivity Report for 2022, with data showing total air connectivity across the European airport network remains 29% below pre-pandemic levels, or equivalent to figures from the 2009 recession. The report's findings include:

  • Greece is the only country to have achieved a full recovery, with Turkey down 3% on 2019 levels;
  • The best performing EU+ markets are Spain (-23%), UK (-28%), Italy (-32%) and France (-34%);
  • Direct connectivity is 15% below pre-pandemic levels, with indirect connectivity down 36% and hub connectivity down 34%;
  • Direct connectivity between Europe and Asia Pacific is down 52% compared to 2019;
  • LCCs account for 40% of direct air connectivity, compared to 27% in 2019;
  • Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (-10%) held the top spot for direct connectivity in absolute terms, followed by Istanbul Airport (-5%) and London Heathrow Airport (-13%).

Oman Air to join oneworld

oneworld announced (20-Jun-2022) Oman Air's admittance into the alliance, with implementation effective 2024. The milestone makes oneworld the only global alliance with three members in the Middle East, after Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian, and marks oneworld's third new member in five years. Oman Air currently serves five oneworld member hubs, comprising Amman, Colombo, Doha, Kuala Lumpur and London Heathrow, and codeshares with oneworld members Malaysia Airlines, SriLankan Airlines, Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian.
