CASA appoints independent team to review and benchmark fatigue rules

Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) appointed (07-Aug-2017) a team of international specialists to conduct an independent review of new fatigue rules. The team will review results of investigations into fatigue related accidents and incidents and how CASA's philosophy and approach to fatigue regulation compares with that of other transport regulators and high-risk industries. The team will then benchmark the new fatigue regulations against those of other leading aviation countries and regulators including the European Aviation Safety Agency, New Zealand, the US, UK and Canada. [more - original PR]

Etihad Airways notes enhanced security measures at Australian airports

Etihad Airways, via its official website, noted (Aug-2017) enhanced security measures at major Australian airports. Etihad stated: "While there is no direct impact on Etihad Airways' operations, guests travelling from Australia are advised to arrive at the airport early and expect a longer process than usual... The safety and security of our guests is our top priority and we will continue to work with the Australian authorities to support the enhanced security measures". Etihad Airways also stated it's aviation security team is "assisting the Australian Federal Police with its investigation" around security (Reuters/AFP/SBS, 01-Aug-2017).

SIA to add Adelaide, Christchurch, Paris, Sapporo and Sydney services for winter 2017/18

Singapore Airlines announced (27-Jul-2017) plans to operate seasonal Sapporo service from 02-Dec-2017 to 06-Jan-2018. The airline will also increase Paris frequency from seven to 10 times weekly and increase Adelaide, Christchurch and Sydney frequency to cater for higher demand during the northern winter season between 29-Oct-2017 and 24-Mar-2018. Adelaide Airport to welcome Air New Zealand Boeing 787-9 service

Adelaide Airport, via its official Instagram account, announced (27-Jul-2017) an Air New Zealand Boeing 787-9 will arrive at the airport for the first time on 28-Jul-2017. As previously reported by CAPA, Air New Zealand will add the aircraft to its existing A320 service during the peak period from 26-Oct-2017 to 25-Mar-2018. The Boeing 787-9 is expected to operate on the route three times weekly. 

Tourism Queensland: Queensland partners with Flight Centre to market State around the world

Flight Centre Travel Group and Queensland Government announced (25-Jul-2017) a new agreement to market the state around the world. Queensland Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones stated: "The AUD6 million (USD4.8 million) deal would build on a previous agreement that delivered a 38% sales increase at travel expos in New Zealand and the UK. This new 2017-2020 partnership will focus on Tourism and Major Events Queensland’s key target markets including New Zealand, UK and Canada and will include a programme of marketing campaigns, consumer promotions, travel agent education and training, product growth and event support, especially around the Commonwealth Games". Qatar Airways announces Doha-Sydney-Canberra service effective 12-Feb-2018

Qatar Airways plans to launch daily Doha-Sydney-Canberra service, effective from 12-Feb-2018, as per a 22-Jul-2017 GDS and inventory timetable display. The carrier will operate with Boeing 777 equipment. CAPA - Centre for Aviation noted the service will increase Doha-Sydney frequency to twice daily, despite restrictions which limit the carrier to operate a total of seven frequencies per week with any aircraft type between Qatar and Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. These restrictions do allow for additional frequencies to either of the four cities provided they route via or continue to a non-major Australian city. Qatar will not be allowed to sell Sydney-Canberra sector.

IASC: Notification of application from Virgin Australia on Italy route

Virgin Australia issued (19-Jul-2017) a request to Australia's International Air Services Commission (IASC) seeking a determination allocating 300 third country codeshare seats per week of capacity on the Italy route, to be used to codeshare with Etihad Airways and Singapore Airlines. The request comes as a result of the recent conclusion of revised air services arrangement between Australia and Italy. The request includes:

  • The allocation is requested for a period of five years;
  • The capacity will be fully utilised by 31-Jul-2018;
  • The capacity may be utilised by Virgin Australia, a wholly owned subsidiaries;
  • The capacity may be utilised for joint services with Singapore Airlines and Etihad Airways. [more - original PR]

Tourism Tasmania identifies key markets to drive tourism via International Market Approach Report

Tourism Tasmania released (Jul-2017) its International Market Approach report which aims to grow annual visitor numbers to Tasmania to 1.5 million and generate visitor expenditure of AUD2.5 billion (USD2 billion) by 2020. The report identified Tasmania's highest priority markets, which include North America, Continental Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and China. [more - original PR]

IASC: Notification of application from Qantas on Italy route

Qatar Airways celebrates five years flying the Perth route

Qatar Airways marked (12-Jul-2017) five years of successful operations between Perth and Doha. Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown stated: "The daily service Perth-Doha service provides more than 4000 weekly seats and connects Western Australia to Qatar Airways’ international network of over 150 destinations".
