Flybe CEO announces reduced schedule for summer 2022

Flybe CEO Dave Pflieger announced (06-Jul-2022) the LCC plans to reduce its schedule between 28-Jul-2022 and 29-Oct-2022, citing supply issues from "the two aircraft leasing companies who were contracted" to provide additional aircraft to the carrier. Flybe's website confirmed it will cancel Belfast City services to Aberdeen, Inverness and Newcastle and Birmingham-Aberdeen service, as well as operate a reduced schedule on the following routes during summer 2022:

  • Belfast City:
    • Birmingham;
    • Edinburgh;
    • Glasgow;
    • Manchester;
    • Southampton;
  • Birmingham:
    • Edinburgh;
    • Glasgow.

Mr Pflieger stated: "This new schedule will be fully supported by the aircraft we do have available, and we will still introduce more flights later this year - after we receive our delayed aircraft". [more - original PR]

Qatar Airways and RwandAir expand codeshare network in the UK

Qatar Airways and RwandAir are scheduled to expand their codeshare network to include Qatar Airways' Doha-Edinburgh, Doha-London Heathrow and Doha-Manchester services from 10-Jul-2022, according to OAG. As previously reported by CAPA, the airlines signed their codeshare agreement in Oct-2021.

Deutsche Bahn to join Star Alliance as first non airline partner

Deutsche Bahn (DB) announced (04-Jul-2022) it will join Star Alliance as the alliance's first non-airline partner, effective 01-Aug-2022. The Star Alliance intermodal partnership model will connect air, rail and other modes of transport, with Germany as the first market. The cooperation will build on the Lufthansa Express Rail programme to enable all Star Alliance member airlines to include DB's ICE trains with flight numbers in their booking system. Programme benefits will include:

  • Travellers will receive boarding passes for both the flight and train at check in, as tickets are combined in the one booking process;
  • Increased choice with regards to preferred travel time, travel duration and prices;
  • Accelerated baggage handling and other services in the AiRail check in area at Frankfurt Airport;
  • Passengers will accrue loyalty programme points for train journeys for all bookings of combined train-air travel via Lufthansa Express Rail or with alliance airlines;
  • Business and first class customers of the alliance's airlines receive additional benefits such as access to the DB lounges with a Lufthansa Express Rail ticket.

DB board member for long distance passenger transport Michael Peterson said: "This is how we get more people off the plane and onto the environmentally friendly rail. In close cooperation with the airlines, we are now tackling the mobility turnaround". Vanuatu reopens to fully vaccinated international travellers

Vanuatu Tourism Office, via its official website, announced (01-Jul-2022) the reopening of Vanuatu's international borders to all fully vaccinated travellers, effective 01-Jul-2022. Travellers aged two and over must present one of the following upon flight check-in:

  • Negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 24 to 72 hours prior to departure;
  • Negative COVID-19 supervised RAT test taken within 24 hours of departure;
  • Positive COVID-19 RAT or PCR test taken at least eight days but no more than two months before date of departure.

Travellers will not be required to test or quarantine upon arrival. Face masks must be worn by all travellers aged 12 and over onboard flights to Vanuatu and within airport terminals.

Ethiopian Airlines to commence Addis Ababa-Bangkok-Manila service in Aug-2022

Ethiopian Airlines is scheduled to commence three times weekly Addis Ababa-Bangkok Suvarnabhumi-Manila service with Boeing 787-8 on 03-Aug-2022, according to OAG. The airline also operates Addis Ababa-Bangkok-Hong Kong and Addis Ababa-Bangkok-Jakarta services.

Jetstar commences Melbourne-Canberra service

Jetstar Airways commenced (01-Jul-2022) daily Melbourne-Canberra service with A320 on 01-Jul-2022, according to Canberra Airport. The service will provide more than 130,000 seats p/a. Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron stated: "Jetstar's expansion proves that the low cost model works for our city and the region. This firmly cements Jetstar's presence in Canberra".
