Jetstar changes check-in baggage fees at Australian and New Zealand airports

Jetstar introduced changes to baggage fees, effective 15-Aug-2017 (stuff.co.nz/news.com.au, 15-Aug-2017).

  • In Australia, the carrier increased its fee for baggage checked-in at airports on the day of departure from AUD50 to AUD60 (USD39.31 to USD47.17), for any item up to 15kg checked. Any items above the 15kg limit will attract an additional fee of AUD15 (USD11.79) per kg;
  • In New Zealand, the carrier reduced its fee for baggage checked-in at airports on the day of departure NZD70 to NZD60 (USD51.11 to USD43.81) for domestic flights and from NZD160 to NZD100 (USD116.80 to USD73.00) for international flights.

Temporary runway closure at Queenstown Airport following light aircraft crash

Singapore Airlines to operate Singapore-Brisbane service three times daily with A350

Singapore Airlines announced (15-Aug-2017) plans to replace A330-300 and Boeing 777-200 aircraft with A350-900 equipment on three of four daily Singapore-Brisbane frequencies, changing aircraft on one daily frequency on 16-Oct-2017, 16-Dec-2017 and 16-Jan-2018. The change will add 24 premium economy seats per service and increase business class capacity by 42% to nearly 100,000 seats p/a. Overall two way Singapore-Brisbane capacity will increase by 53,040 seats to 750,000 seats p/a by Jan-2018. The carrier will increase frequency from three to four times daily in Aug-2017. The A350-900 is configured with 42 business class, 24 premium economy and 187 economy class seats. Singapore Airlines regional VP Tan Tiow Kor said: "The introduction of these three new Airbus A350-900 aircraft along with the introduction of a fourth daily service is in response to the growing demand we have seen from the Queensland market. While this growth is across all cabin classes the demand for additional premium cabin options has been encouraging". Air New Zealand launches promotion to attract Chinese visitors to Wellington

Air New Zealand launched a promotion in the Chinese market offering up to 1000 free connecting services within New Zealand to Chinese travellers (stuff.co.nz, 14-Aug-2017). The promotion has been launched in partnership with Wellington Airport, with coordination by the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency. Air New Zealand passengers flying from Shanghai and Hong Kong will be offered a free connection from Auckland or Christchurch to Wellington. Air New Zealand CEO Christopher Luxon reported Chinese visitors to Wellington rose 17% year-on-year in Jun-2017.

MBIE: 9 out of 10 New Zealand visitors report high levels of satisfaction

New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MIBE) released (14-Aug-2017) a report providing a snapshot of the experiences of international visitors to New Zealand from 3Q2013 to 1Q2017. Key highlights:

  • A high proportion of visitors say New Zealand met or exceeded their expectations, and satisfaction was consistently high across different amenities;
  • Most visitors were highly satisfied with their visit to New Zealand;
    • Overall, visitors reported high levels of satisfaction with visiting New Zealand, rating their visit on average 9 out of 10.
    • Visitors were most satisfied with the natural and built environment (9.1 out of 10) and with their sense of safety (also 9.1 out of 10);
    • Visitor satisfaction was higher among visitors from the US and UK. The US and the UK had the highest average overall satisfaction scores (9.4 out of 10), with Japan and South Korea having the lowest (8.8 and 8.7);
    • Other characteristics (such as age and gender) did not seem to influence visitor satisfaction;
  • Most visitors said their experience in New Zealand met or exceeded their expectations;
    • Over 95% of visitors said their trip in New Zealand met or exceeded their expectations;
    • Visitors from the US and UK were more likely than visitors from other countries to say New Zealand exceeded their expectations;
    • More than 98% of visitors said New Zealand's environment met or exceeded their expectations. Environmentally conscious visitors were more likely to say the environment exceeded their expectations;
  • Visitors were very likely to recommend New Zealand as a holiday destination;
    • New Zealand had a positive net promoter score of 78% when it comes to visitors recommending New Zealand;
    • More than 80% of visitors were likely to recommend New Zealand, with visitors from the US and UK being the most likely to say this;
  • Among visitors who were less satisfied, common themes appeared in their reasons;
    • Of those visitors who gave lower satisfaction scores (1-7), high prices was a commonly listed reason;
    • Other reasons cited included no free WiFi or internet, and inconsistent quality of facilities, of public transportation and customer service. [more - original PR]

Philippine Airlines to commence Manila-Auckland, suspend Manila-Cairns-Auckland service in Dec-2017

Philippine Airlines announced (14-Aug-2017) plans to commence three times weekly nonstop Manila-Auckland service and suspend Manila-Cairns-Auckland service, effective 06-Dec-2017. The carrier will operate Manila-Auckland service with dual class 254 seat A340 equipment, increasing capacity by 60%. The airline operates Manila-Cairns-Auckland service with 156 seat A320 equipment and the new route will reduce travel time to Auckland from 12.15 to 10 hours. [more - original PR]

Uber to resume operation at Adelaide Airport from 14-Aug-2017

Adelaide Airport, via its official Twitter account, confirmed ground transportation services such as taxis resumed normal operations on 10-Aug-2017, however Uber will resume operation from the week of 14-Aug-2017 (SBS, 12-Aug-2017). As previously reported by CAPA, taxi drivers staged a protest at the airport against the approval for ride sharing services to operate at the airport.

Qantas: First 787-9 starts final assembly

Qantas, via its official Instagram account, reported (10-Aug-2017) the first major parts of its first Boeing 787-9 have arrived at the Boeing factory in Seattle and are on the production line. The aircraft is due to be completed by the end of Aug-2017, after which it will move to the paintshop. According to the CAPA Fleet Database, the carrier has eight 787-9s on order.

New Caledonian Congress votes for USD50m in loan guarantees for Air Calin fleet

New Caledonian Congress voted 37 to 15 to approve a USD50 million loan guarantee supporting Air Calin plans to buy two A330neo and two A320neo aircraft for fleet renewal (Radio New Zealand, 11-Aug-2017). Airbus and Air Calin signed an MoU for the aircraft in late Nov-2016. According to the MoU, the aircraft will be delivered between 2019 and 2021. The A320neo aircraft will be configured with 170 seats, while the A330neo aircraft will offer 272 seats.

Western Australia Premier details inquiry into airfares on regular public transport routes

Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan announced the West Australian Government Economics and Industry Standing Committee will hold an inquiry into airfares on regular public transport (RPT) air routes in regional Western Australia (The Sunday Times, 13-Aug-2017). In particular, the Committee will evaluate factors contributing to the current high cost of regional airfares and their impacts from a business, tourism and social perspective. In addition, it will look at State Government regulatory processes on the cost and efficiency of regional air services and possible avenues to limit increases to airfares without undermining the commercial viability of RPT services. A report will be made by the end of Nov-2017.
