AirAsia X to commence operations at Melbourne Avalon Airport in Dec-2018

AirAsia X confirmed (10-Jul-2018) plans to transfer twice daily Kuala Lumpur-Melbourne service from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport to Melbourne Avalon Airport, effective 05-Dec-2018. The airline will be the first to operate an international service at Avalon Airport. AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said: "Our target is to carry half a million guests in the first year of operation, and we're already reviewing other exciting destinations we could potentially launch from Avalon in the future". Mr Ismail added: "We're ramping up our presence in Victoria through a range of regional and state tourism marketing and branding partnerships alongside greater engagement with the local travel trade". Avalon Airport CEO Justin Giddings said construction of the airport's 9000sqm international terminal is "well underway". The terminal will house "the latest innovations in customs equipment and processes", duty free shopping and food and beverage options.
