DATA SPOTLIGHT: Changsha Huanghua International Airport

10 September, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members, we deliver a data snapshot on Huanghua International Airport, serving the city of Changsha, capital of China's Hunan province and now ranked among the world's top 30 airports.

The airport handled 2.2 million passengers and 17,000 aircraft movements in Aug-2020, marking the first month it has handled more than two million passengers since the outbreak of coronavirus, highlighting the continued recovery in China, powered by its huge domestic market.

China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has now reportedly approved the design plan for the Changsha Huanghua International Airport reconstruction and expansion project which includes provisions for the development of a 3600m x 45m third runway, a 500,000 square metre third passenger terminal and 152 aircraft parking stands. The project will require an estimated investment of CNY42 billion (USD6.2 billion). The works are expected to commence in Oct-2020 and be completed by 2030, at which point the airport will be equipped to accommodate up to 60 million passengers per annum.
